The next phase of conservation work on Port Sunlight’s War Memorial begins

Following the successful completion of conservation work on Port Sunlight’s War Memorial’s bronzes and essential surveys of its structure earlier in 2023, Port Sunlight Village Trust has begun the next phase of an important project to protect the Grade I listed monument.

Due to the pointing between joints degrading over time, much of the structure is being repointed to strengthen the War Memorial and make it less vulnerable to water penetration. The stonework is also being carefully steam cleaned.

This work will begin in the week commencing 14 August and continue until early November 2023.

To protect the public and the War Memorial itself, fencing will be placed around the site, which will include the west side of the road (by the noticeboard), and a partial road closure will be in place.

This means the War Memorial will be completely inaccessible to the public while the work is taking place. We understand this isn’t ideal and we’re sorry for any disappointment, but the safety of everyone must be our top priority.

Vehicles will still be able to drive along the Causeway in both directions, however they will only be able to turn around the War Memorial on its east side, which may cause minor disruption to the usual flow of traffic.

This conservation work has been fully funded by Port Sunlight Village Trust and is an important part of our long-term strategy to maintain and look after Port Sunlight’s monuments.

The War Memorial will be fully reopened and accessible in time for Remembrance Sunday. Some minor conservation will take place between 1-3rd November 2023.
