Port Sunlight Residents Survey

Our findings

The background

In March 2024, Port Sunlight Village Trust (PSVT) adopted its first Resident Engagement Strategy which is now being implemented by the organisation. A big step for us, this work sees PSVT seeking residents’ views on all areas of our work, to help improve our services.

To support the implementation of the strategy, PSVT undertook an in-depth survey of all village households. We wanted to better understand who lives in Port Sunlight and to collect residents’ views on all aspects of village life. This is the first full survey since 2016.

The questions were shaped by PSVT staff and Port Sunlight residents, and the findings are informing PSVT’s new three-year Strategic Plan, which will be launched in early 2025 and will shape how we prioritise our work and resources over the coming years.

We employed Catherine Simmons and Paul Kelly, independent consultants, to undertake the survey. All findings were held in strict confidence and the Data Protection Act 2018 was adhered to throughout the process.

The findings

A huge thanks to the residents of Port Sunlight Village for completing the Have Your Say 2024 survey. We received 652 responses from 1,036 properties, 6 more than in 2017, and a return rate of 63%. This time round, residents were also involved in helping to design the survey questions, promoting it within the community, and analysing the findings.

A summary

Preservation of historical charm

Many residents emphasised maintaining the village’s historical and architectural integrity including the need for more resource to maintain the green spaces and homes in the village, whether private or owned by PSVT. A repaired Boating Pond was seen as critical.

Environmental sustainability

There is a strong desire for the village to incorporate modern sustainability practices while preserving its traditional appearance. This includes better insulation, renewable energy sources like solar panels, and improvements in energy efficiency (e.g. triple glazing). Some envision Port Sunlight as a model for climate-resilient retrofitting of heritage buildings.

Enhanced community and inclusivity

Many residents hope for a more inclusive, diverse, and thriving community with spaces for social gatherings and cultural activities. The importance of improving engagement between residents and PSVT is also emphasised.

Modernisation of amenities

Residents suggest adding more modern amenities such as shops, cafés, community gardens, and electric vehicle charging points. Improvements in village infrastructure, including better-maintained pavements, signage, and lighting was highlighted.

Affordable and comfortable living

Ensuring that homes are well-maintained, insulated, and affordable for residents is a common theme. Support for homeowners to maintain their heritage homes was also strongly emphasised.

Balancing tourism and resident needs

While tourism is recognised as important for the village’s economy, many residents feel that the balance with the needs of those living in the village needs to be considered.
