A new approach to managing poppy wreaths at Port Sunlight War Memorial
17 Oct 2025
Following Remembrance Sunday and other memorial events at Port Sunlight’s grade I listed War Memorial, poppy wreaths and other commemorative tributes are often left in place. Over time, they become weather-worn, displaced, and quickly begin to deteriorate.
As a community, we want to ensure the site remains respectful, tidy, and sustainable while preserving the dignity of the tributes left, and so our Resident Landscape Advisory Group have worked with the local Poppy Coordinator and Christ Church to agree a new approach.
What’s new?
Timeframe for wreath removal:
Wreaths will remain at the War Memorial for up to two weeks post-event, allowing adequate time for reflection and visitation.
Relocation:
Once removed, wreaths will be respectfully placed in Christ Church, ideally near the war graves, to maintain the commemorative intention.
Visitor notice:
A public notice will be prepared and displayed near the War Memorial to inform visitors of the wreaths’ relocation and provide directions to the new site.
Final disposal:
The final removal and disposal of wreaths will be carried out by Christ Church in a respectful way at an appropriate time.
Sustainability considerations
We’re taking the Royal British Legion’s lead in phasing out plastic poppy wreaths and using fully recyclable paper poppies.
Existing plastic wreaths are still being distributed until stock is depleted, however alternative eco-friendly wreath options are encouraged.
Conservation considerations
Those creating their own wreaths should be mindful of materials used, especially regarding:
- Their environmental impact
- Potential staining or damage to the War Memorial stonework (e.g., paint, dyes, adhesives)
Any wreaths or memorial tributes which may cause staining will be gently moved either to another location on the War Memorial or to Christ Church.

We would like to thank the Landscape Advisory Group for their support.
