Over 130 acres of colourful gardens and parks

It’s no surprise that over 130 acres of colourful gardens and parks can be explored in the village that inspired the Garden City movement.

Did you know every green space in the village is cared for all-year round by Port Sunlight Village Trust’s hard-working gardeners? Yes, that includes the front gardens of every property too, which are listed alongside the houses themselves. The village is Green Flag Award accredited in recognition of its well-kept green spaces.

As part of William Lever’s vision for Port Sunlight, the village is filled with picturesque parks and they’re all open for everyone to enjoy.

Green spaces at Port Sunlight

The Dell

What was once a tidal creek is now a picturesque park. The Dell runs past the Lyceum and underneath the iconic grade II listed Dell Bridge, and makes for a relaxing stroll no matter the time of year. In spring, the Dell is filled with daffodils, blossom and rhododendron, before summer transforms it into the perfect spot to take a seat on one of the benches. In autumn, the trees put on a grand show of colour that is a photographer’s dream.

Hillsborough Memorial Green

At the lower end of the Diamond is the Hillsborough Memorial Garden, created in memory of those who lost their life in the Hillsborough tragedy. It’s private and peaceful feel makes this a place to reflect. The borders are often filled with colour and it offers a raised viewpoint to gaze along the Diamond towards the Lady Lever Art Gallery in the distance.

The Diamond & Rose Garden

The magnificent boulevard running through the centre of Port Sunlight is known as the Diamond. Its sweeping views from the Jubilee Arch, past the War Memorial and to the Lady Lever Art Gallery are bound to inspire. Here you’ll find one of the longest rose gardens in the North West, brimming with several colourful varieties including the tea-scented, apricot-coloured Port Sunlight Rose from David Austin. Visit between May and September to see roses in bloom.

Village Green

Opposite Port Sunlight Museum and Lady Lever Art Gallery is the village green, a large open space where visitors and the community alike relax and play. During the warmer months, it’s home to a range of events and activities from food and drink festivals to family-friendly games.

The Woodlands

Behind Christ Church, between King Edward’s Drive and Corniche Road, is a wild woodland area. Walk along avenues through the trees, rest on the benches and look out for wildflowers popping up. Pockets of woodland can also be found all around the village.
